From the keeper’s account

Ten illustrated scenes, from the lighthouse to the glass.

The frozen coastal village, harbor and lighthouse beneath the northern lights

01 / 10

The Land

Aye. I've kept the light on this coast longer than any man ought to keep anything.

They call me the Steward of the Seas.

From my lamp, I see the harbor, the mountains, and the black water between them.

Behind those windows, people make music to keep the cold from settling in their bones.

One girl kept her words to herself.

The sea heard her anyway.

The girl at her desk, with a shadow waiting in the window reflection

02 / 10

The Room

Her mother chose her words, her company, her future. Each evening, the key turned in her bedroom door.

So she filled a notebook with everything she couldn't say.

One night, she looked up from the page. In the window, her reflection was screaming.

She hadn't made a sound.

Beyond the glass, something waited with her face.

The girl at the shore beneath the lights of the coastal village

03 / 10

The Night of the Sea

Near midnight, a moth lifted from her windowsill. A silver thread ran through its wings. Nothing so small should have survived that cold.

She followed it to the shore.

Behind her, the life chosen for her. Ahead, the black sea.

A vast wall of ice beneath the mountains, holding back the giants

04 / 10

The Wall of Ice

Above the shore stood the Wall of Ice. Giants moved beyond it. Their blows came through the ground like thunder.

She watched the wall hold.

For the first time, she understood the comfort of a boundary.

Two hooded assassins cutting through a thread of sound with their blades

05 / 10

Twin Assassins

The old voices followed her.

"Be reasonable. Don't make a scene."

She'd heard them so often, they sounded like her own.

Then the Twin Assassins came. Their blades cut the echoes tangled around her voice.

One stroke, and the shame fell silent. Another, and the fear loosened its grip.

She drew a breath.

Malice reaches across the stormy surf, with a ship and lighthouse behind her

06 / 10

The Drive of Malice

By the water, I heard her sing.

A breath, at first. Low, beautiful, wounded.

Then a second voice beneath it, with teeth.

Then a third that shook the snow from the cliffs.

One voice feeding the next. A whisper gathering into a storm.

I knew the girl within it. Every word she'd swallowed had found its way out.

The sailors call her the siren.

I call her Malice.

The Aurora Curtain casts color across the frozen mountains and sea

07 / 10

Aurora Curtain

Her song grew brighter, sharper, until even the mountains seemed to ring.

Then the Aurora Curtain moved across the sky. Color softened the peaks. The glare began to fade.

Her song still carried across the water.

Now I could hear each note within the storm.

The girl meets the Steward of the Seas at his lighthouse

08 / 10

The Steward of the Seas

She came to my lighthouse once, soaked from the rocks.

"Come inside."

She said, "Aren't you going to tell me what to do?"

"I suspect enough people have done that already."

A great wave struck below us.

"That one needed somewhere to go."

A smaller wave followed.

"And that one?"

She said, "It will pass."

We sat by the lamp and listened.

There is a great difference, child, between being quiet and being silenced.

A glowing reactor deep in the ship, surrounded by its dark machinery

09 / 10

The Reactor

When the sea calmed, a ship came out of the dark. She went aboard. I watched her lantern go below decks.

Deep in the hull, a steady heart fed every force above it. Its own roar stayed beneath the waterline.

Then the ship carried her into open water.

Malice behind the glowing porthole of the pedal, held above the sea

10 / 10

Behind the Glass

Aye, I keep the light still.

Some nights, a circle of light rises where no ship should be. A porthole. A window.

And she is behind it. Behind glass and iron, inside an instrument built to hold her world.

She is still calling. And now, I think she's calling for you.

Bring her a note. Decide how gently she speaks, or how hard she strikes.

I've never been able to answer her.

But you might.

Bring her a note

Put her world in your hands.
